Transforming Futures: How Making Moves Helps Families Access Opportunities

acain248

Every family deserves the opportunity to build a strong future, and where you live plays a crucial

role in shaping that future. Research has consistently shown that access to quality schools, secure neighborhoods, and strong community resources can have a lasting impact on a family’s success. However, for many families relying on Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), these opportunities have often felt out of reach. That’s where CDLI’s Making Moves program comes in.

Why Neighborhood Choice Matters

The environment in which children grow up directly affects their educational achievement, future earnings, and overall well-being. Studies have shown that children who move to high-opportunity neighborhoods are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, and secure well-paying jobs in adulthood. In addition, these areas often provide access to healthcare and enriching extracurricular activities, all of which contribute to a healthier and more stable lifestyle for the entire family.

How Making Moves Makes a Difference

The Making Moves program is designed to support families in relocating to communities that offer educational, economic, and social opportunities. With personalized guidance and financial assistance, Making Moves removes the barriers that often prevent families from accessing these life-changing neighborhoods.

The program provides:

  • Housing Search Assistance – Experienced housing mobility coaches help families identify and secure homes in opportunity-rich areas.

  • School Information and Support – Families receive guidance on school districts and connections to school staff to ensure a smooth transition.

  • Neighborhood Exploration – Families can take tours of potential communities to see firsthand what they have to offer.

  • Financial Coaching and Short-Term Assistance – Resources and temporary financial support help ease the transition.

  • Post-Move Counseling – Support continues for up to two years after the move to help families adjust and thrive.

  • Landlord Engagement – Assistance in navigating relationships with property owners to ensure successful housing placements.

  • Peer Support Networks – Opportunities to connect with other families who have made similar moves, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.
